Our Services

Our service or model is based on three steps:

Step 1
(Pre-treatment/Intake - 2 to 4 weeks)

Referral

  • Ensures a match between the service needs of the young person and the ability of the Cedars to meet them;

  • May result in waitlist, admission or referral to a more appropriate resource;

  • The assessment process begins as information is gathered.

Intake

  • The young woman is admitted to the program and takes up residence in the house;

  • Orientation begins (introducing routines, expectations, programs, e.g., therapy, psycho-educational groups, the 12-Step program

  • Restrictions are imposed for a period of 2 weeks (a settling in period).

Assessment

A comprehensive assessment is completed that includes, among other things, a SASSI, a Psycho-social Assessment, and Inventories.

Treatment Planning

  • The young women work closely with their key worker to develop goals and strategies for treatment; these goals are revised throughout treatment based on the resident's progress and stage of readiness for change.

Step 2
(Treatment - 8 to 12 weeks)

Treatment Modalities

Process groups occur daily and staff and residents focus on the behaviours associated with addiction (anger reaction, manipulation, communication, and the emotions occurring before/during/after the active addiction (hurt, loneliness, rejection) and the personal circumstances that may have led to the development and maintenance of the addiction (self-esteem, family conflict, and identity).

Psycho-educational groups occur daily and staff use various methods to convey new information about self (understanding self-esteem, needs, wants and harm reduction) developing new skills (anger management, conflict resolution, assertiveness, and wellness) and learning about others (peer pressure and communication). This is a rotating twelve-week curriculum.

12-Step programming occurs daily (personal work) and at least 4 times a week (attending groups). Coordinated by a staff member, the 12-Steps is a proven program that promotes an understanding of one's addiction (as a disease) and the steps necessary to achieve and maintain abstinence. This supplements the therapeutic programming.

Psycho-therapy, individual and group sessions, occur at least weekly. Focus on personal growth related to living substance free. During the groups, there may be an exploration and resolution of historical issues.

Recreation includes group activities coordinated by a staff member who has a background in Adventure Therapy. The goal is to achieve overall physical and emotional wellness by successfully participating in activities (rock climbing, kayaking, hiking, swimming, and working out). A focus on trust, body image and self-acceptance is a key component of the recreational programming.

Wellness is achieved through good diet, exercise, ample rest, reduction or cessation of smoking and the young women learn healthy lifestyle habits.

Routines encourage the young women to exercise self-regulatory behaviours and subsequently experience success.

Step 3
(Discharge - 1 to 2 weeks)

Aftercare planning

  • In order to maintain the progress made during treatment, a comprehensive plan is developed

Relapse Prevention

  • A plan is developed prior to discharge that sets out the steps necessary to prevent relapse

Aftercare

The young women may return to The Cedars for up to three months after discharge for individual counselling, support, or to participate in any of the groups.

Families of the young women may participate in The Cedar's Family Group during the time their daughter is in residence and for up to three months after her discharge.
